RYA Powerboat Level 2

RYA Powerboat Level 2 (no need to do Level 1)

If you want to handle a powerboat safely and confidently, whether for safety cover, supporting training or general club duties, our PB2 course gives you the skills you need. It is the national standard for small powerboat handling and is essential for anyone who wants to drive a club safety boat in a responsible, competent way.

This course is for members only and offers exceptional value compared with commercial centres. We run it across a weekend.

What this course is about

Powerboat Level 2 teaches the core skills of powerboat handling. You will learn how to launch, recover, manoeuvre at slow speed, handle the boat at planing speed, approach pontoons and pick up moorings. You will also cover collision regulations, basic navigation, safety roles, and essential knowledge for providing safe support on the water.

By the end of the course you will be able to handle a powerboat safely and will understand your responsibilities when driving for the club.

A typical progression

Sessions run in a structured order, but we adapt to weather and reservoir conditions. A typical pathway includes:

Core boat handling

  • Pre launch checks and safety kit
  • Launching and recovering from the slipway
  • Slow speed manoeuvring and close quarters control
  • Turning in confined spaces
  • Picking up and securing to moorings or buoys

Higher speed handling

  • Trim and balance at planing speed
  • Safe acceleration and deceleration
  • Controlled turns and managing wash
  • Approaching a casualty or capsized dinghy safely

Safety and seamanship

  • Collision regulations
  • Basic chart and buoyage awareness
  • Anchoring and securing the boat
  • Responsibilities when providing safety cover
  • Managing simple incidents with clear, calm actions

How the sessions run

  • Kit checks and briefing at the start of each session
  • On the water for structured exercises and coaching
  • Short breaks for discussion and key learning points
  • End of session debrief with individual feedback

The pace is steady, supportive and focused on building real world confidence, not just ticking boxes.

Equipment and what to bring

We provide the powerboats, safety equipment and fuel. You should bring warm layers, a waterproof top, gloves if you have them and footwear that can get wet. Club wetsuits and buoyancy aids are available to borrow.

  • Safety and support

All teaching follows RYA standards with qualified instructors and a strong focus on safe practice. You will be well supported, with clear demonstrations, plenty of time at the helm and patient guidance throughout.

After the course

Once signed off, you will be able to support club activities, help with safety cover and work alongside experienced drivers to keep the water safe for everyone. It is an excellent way to give back to the club and gain a practical, valuable skill.

How to book

This course is for members only and places are limited. To join the PB2 course, become a member, then contact the training team to secure your place and receive your joining instructions.
