Club Racing
Racing at Pennine SC is at the heart of what we do. It is friendly, competitive in the right way and open to all abilities, from complete beginners taking their first steps into the sport to experienced sailors looking for a proper challenge. We race every Thursday evening through the season and every Sunday all year round, offering something for everyone.
What makes our racing special?
- A warm, welcoming fleet where everyone is encouraged
- Courses set for fun and good competition rather than complexity
- Mixed fleets so all boats can take part
- Support for new racers, including help at the start line and during the race
- Qualified safety cover so you can race with confidence
- A real sense of community with plenty of chat and support in the boat park
Thursday Evenings
Thursday night racing is one of the best parts of the club. As the breeze settles across the reservoir you get close, competitive sailing in a relaxed, sociable atmosphere. We usually run two races back to back, giving you plenty of time on the water without keeping you out too late.
The courses are simple, the starts are welcoming and the focus is on getting people out on the water, improving their skills and enjoying good racing with friends. It is the perfect place for newer sailors who want to build confidence. The pace is steady, help is always on hand and the emphasis is on taking part.
After sailing we have pie and peas in the clubhouse, which is a very popular part of the evening and a great way to warm up and catch up with everyone.
More experienced racers enjoy Thursdays too because the fleet is mixed, the battles are close and the racing is always clean and good natured. The boat park chat carries on well into the evening with plenty of laughter and stories from the water.
Sundays
Sunday racing is the heart of the club. We run five races each Sunday, with three before lunch and two after, giving a brilliant mix of short, sharp racing and longer tactical sessions.
You will see everything from juniors in Teras to adults in Lasers, Solos, Streakers and double handers, all racing together under the handicap system. The racing is varied and the conditions change with the seasons. Light wind tactical days in summer, full power autumn breezes and crisp winter mornings all offer a different challenge.
Sunday racing is the best way to improve your boat handling, understand wind shifts and learn how to sail efficiently round a course. The atmosphere is welcoming and supportive. Whether you are chasing the front of the fleet or simply trying to get round the course cleanly, you will find people cheering you on and offering friendly advice.
Join the fun
If you want to improve your sailing, meet new people and experience the best of club life, racing is the way to do it. Come along on a Thursday night or join us on a Sunday and you will be made very welcome on and off the water.
