Early Summer evening series - Week 4 summary

Published 12:39pm on 24 Apr 2026

Sailors were greeted with a beautiful evening with an easterly wind in the 6 - 10 mph range with a few hiking gusts for race 1, although this dropped to almost nothing for race 2.

It was great to see 14 boats out including 2 boats from the University of Sheffield (UoS) as well as a debut from one of our new members, Ed Jones who free sailed.

Race one saw a long course starting near B with a course of KEJPNBA and with the leaders averaging a 15 min lap time. On the 1st beat the majority of the fleet chose the port side of the beat, but the intrepid Spedding's took a gamble favouring the starboard side on his own.  Ultimately the port side paid off and Dengate Snr took early lead but suffered after taking the front half of the fleet to the wrong mark!  Spedding's took the advantage only to be overtaken again by Dengate Snr at the gybe mark and he then went on to take a commanding lead and got line honours and the race.

For the second race the start line was moved to D with a short windward leeward course of EC.  The decision on the long start line was which end - port or starboard?  Those who went for the port end came out on top and in the falling wind Dom and one of the UoS Firefly's took advantage and surged ahead.  Only one lap was sailed due to the dying wind and Dom took the bullet although the Firefly got it on handicap.

As ever, thank you to the duty team of Pete, Ed and Andrew for overseeing another great evening on the water.
